The Chiropractors Act 1994 provides statutory regulation for the profession and the title ‘chiropractor’ is protected under this legislation, meaning only individuals who hold a recognized qualification from a suitable educational institution may call themselves a chiropractor. The statutory regulator is the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practise as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC within the UK.
The GCC has set the standards of education in Chiropractic and all Chiropractors must have graduated from an accredited institution before being accepted into the register. The GCC only accepts Chiropractors who have gone through a minimum of a four-year, full-time internationally-accredited course. In the UK there are currently two institutions offering this degree.
The Anglo European Collage of Chiropractic (AECC) and The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIOC), at the University of South Wales, formerly university of Glamorgan. The syllabus covers in-depth training in a variety of subjects including life sciences, biomechanics, clinical medicine and differential diagnosis. Practitioners also undergo practical training in adjustment and supervised clinical training, where they have hands on practice in treating patients.
The British Chiropractic association (BCA) provides Chiropractors through the UK with a high quality of professional indemnity insurance. The BCA is the largest and longest established association for Chiropractors in the UK, requiring the highest standards of education and conduct from its members. The association operates a robust professional standards and complaints management process.
Graduates who are member of the BCA undertake an additional year of supervised training as a requirement of membership of the BCA. In 2004, the GCC introduced a mandatory requirement for Chiropractor to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) as a condition of annual registration.
We are members of the British Chiropractic Association and the Royal Collage of Chiropractors and Registered with the General Chiropractic Council.
