What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons, nerves and muscles, especially related to the spine and the effects they have on the nervous system.
Chiropractic treatment involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine and other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, and exercise as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.
Chiropractic doesn’t involve the use of any drugs or surgery and is suitable for all ages.
What is a Chiropractor?
Chiropractors are primary health care practitioners. The title ‘chiropractor’ is a protected title in the UK, and this is regulated by the GCC. By law, the GCC check those who apply for registration to make sure that they have a recognised chiropractic qualification, are of good character and are physically and mentally fit.
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Yes, chiropractic is generally a safe and effective form of care when provided by registered chiropractors. The approach to care that chiropractors take is recommended in the Department of Health’s Musculoskeletal Services Framework. Patients may experience some side effects such as feeling a bit sore, stiff or tired for a day or so – these effects are normal and only temporary. Advice will be given as to what to expect aftertreatment. It is important that you talk to your chiropractor if you have any questions during any part of your care.
Will it hurt?
Are there any side effects of treatment?
Some patients have mild reaction such as temporary aches and pains after their spine or joints have been manipulated or after exercising. Advice will be given as to what to expect after treatment. It is important that you talk to your chiropractor if you feel worried about anything either during or after treatment.
What is the ‘popping’?
Sometimes a pop will accompany the adjustments that your chiropractor makes to the joints. Lubricating fluids are found between the surfaces of the joints. Some adjusting techniques move these surfaces apart very quickly. A bubble of gas forms in the liquid due to a change in pressure making a “pop” sound. The same phenomenon occurs when opening a champagne bottle.
How can it benefit?
Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness.
You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture
What are some warning signs of Joint Dysfunction?
Symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck stiffness, pain in your shoulders, arms or legs, numbness in your hands or feet, fatigue, or nervousness are the most common signs of joint dysfunction. But, like a tooth cavity, most people can have a dysfunctional joint long before they notice any painful symptoms.
How long does a treatment last and how often would I need treating?
The first treatment is the longest – lasting 40 minutes to 1hr. During this appointment we will go through your full case history and undertake an examination to determine the caused of the problem. Once this is completed an explanation will be presented to you explaining what the diagnosis is and what treatment plan would be recommended for you. There will always be opportunity for you to ask any questions as we feel it really important that you understand and are happy to move forward to treatment. More information found here.
Following the first visit treatment times are around 15minutes. There are no set plans in our clinic however there is a pattern that we find most our patients fall into. This typically follows a 4-6wk initial treatment period during which your treatments are slightly more consistent to begin with then it’s spread out.. After an acute period of treatment when your body is functioning properly without pain or dysfunction we encourage our patients to continue treatment on a preventative basis, to maintain the improvements and keep the body functioning at its optimum. Like going to see your dentist on a regular basis.
Is Chiropractic suitable for all ages?
Yes, Chiropractic care is suitable for all ages, from newborn babies through to the aging population! Chiropractors use a variety of different techniques and will select a technique that is most suited to you.
When the pain stops does that mean the problem has gone?
Pain is often the last symptom to show up when you have a problem and usually the first symptom to go. Remember pain is just one of a number of symptoms your body experiences when it’s not working right. Not all signs and symptoms improve at the same rate. Even though you may be ‘feeling better’ relatively quickly your body may not have the time necessary to change old habits and patterns. Remember we are working on the root cause of your condition not just the pain. We don’t want the problem to return!
How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on your particular condition, its severity and your response to treatment. At the end of your initial consultation we will go over your specific requirements before any treatment commences.
What happens when I am better?
At the conclusion of a course of treatment many of our patients choose to attend the Clinic periodically in much the same way as they do with the Dentist. Periodic visits can help maintain what has been achieved through treatment and/or help prevent new problems arising. The decision to continue with Maintenance Care is very much a personal one and although we advise this, it is not obligatory.
